When referring to the word “plagiarism”, according to dictionary.com, they define plagiarism as “an unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another and the representation of them as one’s own original work, as by not crediting the author”. When it comes to plagiarizing, most of those who are victimized by it are students and researchers who often perform the act of plagiarism purposely or unintentionally. Two articles that will be discussed in further detail include first, an article entitled Exploring University Students’ Perceptions of Plagiarism: a focus group study by Judith Gullifer and Graham A Tyson. They refer to students’ and plagiarism as “plagiarism, a type of academic dishonesty is often conceived as fraudulent behaviour that diminishes the intellectual property of the original author and rewards plagiarists for their work”. The second article is entitled Conceptual Awareness of Research Scholars about Plagiarism at Higher Education Level: Intellectual Property Right and Patent by Zulfiqar Ali Cheema, Sheikh Tariq Mahmood, Dr. Azhar Mahmood, and Makhdoom Ali Shan. This article refers to students’ and plagiarism as “Research has proved that plagiarism is a common factor among the students and it is due to unawareness of plagiarism”. Each of the two descriptions are similar in where they show two sides of plagiarism, one in which discusses a group study about students’ and plagiarism and the other discusses how researchers are also a victim of plagiarism and how they deal with it.

Exploring University Students’ Perceptions of Plagiarism: a focus group study

This article was first published in June of the year 2010; this article in particular states that “plagiarism is perceived to be a growing problem and universities are being required to devote increasing time and resources to combating it”. It is a fact that most students’ within their time in college or even in high school, perform acts of plagiarism either because they are too lazy to do their work, does not have the time, or even because they just believe the work is too hard, whatever the reason is, it is expected for some students’ to plagiarize. However, just because students’ perform acts of plagiarism, doesn’t mean that these acts are justifiable. Universities and institutions are coming up with ways to prevent students’ from performing acts of plagiarism because plagiarism is just another word for cheating, theft, or even piracy. This study that was conducted “explores students’ perceptions of a number of issues relating to a plagiarism in an Australian University”. The experiment was made up of four focus groups, 13 undergrad psychology students’. The experiment was split up into two phases; the first phase entailed for researchers who were conducting the experiment to understand how students’ viewed and understood the act of plagiarism. Then once the researchers found out this piece of information, the second phase of the experiment entailed the students’ to develop different ways of learning that would correspond with certain courses. Their findings of the experiment were “that students’ had lack of ability to comprehend and paraphrase work due to citation.” Also, “students reported an increasing understanding of plagiarism as a function of year level, with associate skill development to complete assignments”. This was one of the many experiments that were mentioned in this article however the one experiment that stuck out the most was the way these researchers were able to give some explanation as to why students’ plagiarize in the first place.

Conceptual Awareness of Research Scholars about Plagiarism at Higher Education Level: Intellectual Property Right and Patent

This article was published in January of the year 2011; this article is about why researchers are one of the top groups to be criticized about plagiarizing the most. Most people believe the reasoning for researchers being criticized the most is due to the unawareness about intellectual property. Within the article, it is said that in order for researchers to put articles or any type of written statement out to the public, they must go through a literature review which is proposed of a series of questions that researchers must answer in order for the researchers work to be published. This however, is where most of the problems occur for researchers. Sometimes researchers when they are putting together their writings, they sometimes don’t understand that when they are gathering information for their articles or statements that they must put their findings in their own words or at least give credit to those in where they took the information from. So that is why it is important for researchers to know the two types of plagiarisms in which the article names as intentional (claiming someone else’s work is theirs) and unintentional (which is two change a few words around and not change the actual structure of the sentence). Also it is important for each researcher to be aware of the penalties of performing an act of plagiarism. They include: first, “a perfect crime; penalties are: dismissal from service and black listed from job and author”. Second, “poor disguise; penalties are: demotion and black listing the author”. And third is “unintentional penalties which include: issuance of warning, freezing of research incentives, and freezing of service benefits”. This is just a small part of what researchers need to be aware of when they are conducting certain statements or articles. This is why researchers are one of the highest groups to be criticized next to students because due with all they have to deal with, some either forget or don’t know whether they are plagiarizing; they deal with such loads of information that this is something that both groups must remember.

Generation Plagiarism?

This article is about how high school students and middle school students plagiaries without even knowing they are doing so they go on the internet and use an article but they don’t have the authors name so they still put it in their work and don’t give anyone credit . The article states “Copying and pasting from the Web is just like copying from a book. But too many students don't know- or don't care- that it's cheating”. What they don’t realize is that it is still plagiarism. Another kid wrote out an entire article from the internet but thought since he didn’t copy and paste it that it would be fine to write it out. He did this because his teacher told him that plagiarism was copying and pasting text from a source like the internet. So he didn’t know that he was plagiarizing because he didn’t copy and paste. The article states “The internet is magical”.

This article was published on November 7,2011. This article is about how many college students actually plagiaries. They show statistics on how many people will drink and do drugs which is 32 percent and 14 percent will drop out and they tell how 1,000 students will be accused of plagiarism. That’s just accused not even including the kids who didn’t get caught. This statistic is unbelievable. The author states “plagiarism is meant to be an inherently moral error, not a technical one. It should be full of intent”. Which means that everything you write down should be from your head not from the article. This article goes on to tell you about college student’s stories of being accused of plagiarism. It also tells the consequences for plagiarism which are suspension marked down a letter grade and or expulsion. It also states “In the summer of 2008, 19-year-old college student Allison Routman was taking the University of Virginia's "Semester at Sea" course on board a ship touring the Mediterranean, when she was convicted of plagiarism for allegedly copying fragments of three lines from Wikipedia describing the plot of a movie into her global studies essay. Trip administrators immediately expelled her from the program and abandoned her at the next port, where she ended up sleeping in the airport. The reason: the University of Virginia has one of the strictest plagiarism policies in the academic world, requiring students to sign an honour code pledging not to lie or cheat on their assignments.”

The Use of Technology to Combat Plagiarism In Business Communication Classes

The basic point in this article is that plagiarism can’t just be overlooked any longer because technology has made it so easy for people to plagiarize. Then it goes on to say that technology has not only made it easier to plagiarize but has made it easier to detect when someone has plagiarized. It talks about international students not understanding what plagiarism really is. There is an antiplagiarism technology, which business communication instructors use as a tool to teach all students about acceptable writing standards preventing plagiarism from the start. The article goes through other antiplagiarism programs such as SafeAssign which is used through blackboard and is free for all universities. It’s a review of the best ways to fight plagiarism and even prevent it from occurring.

Promoting Academic Integrity in Higher Education

The article was about finding the ways which were best at lowering plagiarism in higher education. Four ways were highlighted such as faculty training, effective classroom management strategies, clear definitions and examples of cheating and placing an 'XF' on official transcripts of students found cheating. Academic dishonesty not only takes away from administrative time, but the school losses integrity and the student gains a lack of respect for values. Using a modified Academic Integrity Survey they came up with the results list at the beginning of this summary. Getting training and up to date research on cheating to professors could be positive in helping them to work with the student. Another huge point highlighted as a way to promote academic integrity was by developing a philosophy about it that promotes and educates faculty and students instead of just putting so much emphasis on consequences and penalties.
